Is There Such a Thing as a Catholic Destination Wedding?

Actualizado: 28 may 2023

The majority of couples seeking the sacrament of matrimony within the Catholic Church are not aware that they can have the best of both worlds, a catholic ceremony and a destination wedding celebration.

This is in part because Catholics cannot just get married anywhere or get married by just anyone.

On the Code of Canon Law which is a code of ecclesiastical laws governing the Catholic Church, 1118.1 states the following: "A marriage between Catholics, or between a catholic party and a baptised non-catholic, is to be celebrated in the parish church. By permission of the local Ordinary or of the parish priest, it may be celebrated in another church or oratory." To be more specific, the canon does not limit the couple to marry outside of their parish, diocese, or archdiocese, therefore, catholics seeking this sacrament can pursue their dream and get married in a catholic church or oratory at another country.

The Catholic Church teaches that the Sacrament of Marriage is a covenant. A covenant is much more than a mere contract, it is a pact that will always express a relationship between people. The Baltimore Catechism defines sacrament as "an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace." Grace is the bestowal of blessings that gives the person(s) the spiritual tools to be faithful to their covenant. Because of all of this, Catholics are urged to celebrate their marriage within the Eucharistic Liturgy.

There is series of steps that need to be accomplished before a couple can receive this sacrament and a series of requirements, therefore, the couple seeking this sacrament is encouraged to speak with their parish before setting a date for this grandiose day as it could take at least 9 months to complete them all, but a little longer if the wedding will be abroad.
